Weight loss is a tough subject…
For most, it’s a life-long pursuit to get even the most basic grasp of.
Social media, blogs and the like, are pushing confusing messages onto the vulnerable.
In my 15 years helping those kick start their healthy habits, here are 5 of the most Frequently asked questions on weight loss.
What impact does exercise have on weight loss? I’ve read about the number of calories exercise actually burns and it doesn’t really seem worth the effort?
- Sure, one bout of any given exercise won’t have a significant effect on weight loss, instead, think of the cumulative effect of exercise over a week, month and year. Simply walking for 1 hour, 5 times per week, could help you lose up to 9kg in a year without any special diets! Not to mention the positive effects exercise has on stress, anxiety, and depression.
Should I do a detox diet?
- Detox diets are just another “FAD”. Sure, you might see some great initial weight loss (most likely through fluid loss or extreme food restriction) but as soon as you stop the detox the weight will pile back on! Instead, start on a well-rounded diet of wholesome foods. Think Vegetables, Fruit, Lean meat, nuts, and seeds. Avoid processed, packaged foods as they are typically laden with hidden sugar.
What dietary supplements should I take to help aid my weight loss?
- In short, NONE. The reason people put on weight is that they are consuming too many calories, not because they are deficient or in the need of supplementing their diet with a magic pill. With the money you save, find a local health professional who can help you map out a plan of attack.
Whenever I start a new diet, I always crave the foods I’m not allowed to eat! How do I stop these cravings?
- It is human nature to crave things which we are “not allowed”. Instead of avoiding these cravings, work with your health professional to incorporate these foods into your weekly eating plan. Everybody can enjoy “bad” foods in moderation. Because, what is life without ANY chocolate…am I right???
How much weight should I be losing per week?
- With the inception of shows like the “Biggest Loser,” it has thrown a skewed perception into the public eye of what an acceptable amount of weight to lose over a week. Sometimes the contestants were chastised for losing less than a kilogram per week, which is outrageous. Research into weight-loss tells us that around 200-400g is safe per week (10-20kg over 12 months), depending on your starting point. It is also important to point out that the greater the weight loss per week, the greater the chance of gaining the weight back in the long term. Over 90% of those who lose weight rapidly in the short term through FAD diets, will gain the weight back in the next 12 months. Moral of the story, make small changes, make it a long-term lifestyle choice.
